Major festivals — when and what to expect
Diwali (October/November)
Biggest community celebration. Warsaw typically holds a large public Diwali event — in recent years near the Palace of Culture and Science — Pałac Kultury i Nauki (PAH-wats kool-TOO-rih ee NAH-oo-kee). Kraków and Wrocław have smaller community gatherings in rented halls. Follow community WhatsApp for dates each year.
Holi (March)
Community events in parks and outdoor spaces. Coloured powder — gulal — available at Indian stores before the festival. Search Facebook for "Holi Warsaw / Kraków / Wrocław" for event locations each year.
Navratri & Garba (September/October)
Garba events organised by Gujarati and broader Hindu community associations. Warsaw has active Navratri — 9-night events in rented halls — sale na wynajem (SAH-leh nah vih-NAH-yem). Open to all Indians.
Requesting leave from work for Indian festivals
Indian festivals are not Polish public holidays — dni wolne od pracy (dnee VOL-neh od PRAH-tsih). You must take annual leave — urlop wypoczynkowy (OOR-lop vih-poh-CHIN-koh-vih). Most Polish employers are understanding if asked in advance.

Shops and offices close on these dates — sklepy są zamknięte (SKLEH-pih som zam-KNYEH-teh = shops are closed). Stock up on groceries before:
- 1 January — Nowy Rok (NOH-vih rok) — New Year
